To ask the Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families what education spending in England as a proportion of gross domestic product was in each year since 1996-97, expressed to two decimal places; what estimate he has made of the equivalent proportions in each year until 2011-12; and if he will make a statement. Education spend as a proportion of GDP is only available for the UK. The Government will increase UK spending in education as a proportion of GDP from 4.68 per cent. in 1996-97 to 5.64 per cent. in 2010-11. The full run of figures from 1996-97 to 2010-11 are shown in the following table.
