To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many (a) women and (b) men have been diagnosed with breast cancer at the most recent date for which figures are available. (172091)

The information requested falls within the responsibility of the National Statistician who has been asked to reply.

Letter from Karen Dunnell, dated 10 December 2007:

As National Statistician, I have been asked to reply to your recent Parliamentary Question asking how many (a) women and (b) men have been diagnosed with breast cancer at the most recent date for which figures are available. [172091]

The latest available figures for newly diagnosed cases (incidence) of malignant neoplasm of breast are for the year 2004, and are available on the National Statistics website at: http://www.statistics.gov.uk/StatBase/Product.asp?vink=8843&Pos=&ColRank=1&Rank=272

In England, (a) 36,939 women and (b) 272 men were diagnosed in 2004.
