Housing Benefit

19. To ask the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions what steps his Department plans to take to improve the administration of housing benefit by local authorities. (175884)

Administration has improved significantly. The average processing time on a new claim has dropped from 56 days four years ago, to 33 in 2006-07. The improvement is even more marked in what were previously the worst performing authorities.

We are continually taking steps to simplify the system to make it easier for local authorities to administer the scheme.
