To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs pursuant to the answer of 29 November, Official Report, column 616W, on early retirement, what estimate he has made of the cost to his Department of the early retirement schemes being offered to staff; and if he will make a statement. [holding answer 11 December 2007]: The total cost of early departure schemes being run by this Department during financial year 2007-08 is estimated at £47 million.
