Aircraft Carriers: Construction

Volume 470: debated on Wednesday 23 January 2008

12. To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what discussions he has had with the Scottish Executive and the Ministry of Defence on the development of the skills base in Scotland in preparation for construction of the two aircraft carriers. (179999)

The development of skills in Scotland is largely a matter for the Scottish Executive. However, the Ministry of Defence works closely with suppliers in order to develop an understanding of its long-term shipbuilding plans so that the industry can plan recruitment and training accordingly. The anticipated contract for the manufacture of the two carriers potentially presents great opportunities for yards both on the Clyde and at Rosyth and highlights that Government spending on defence has a far reaching impact on Scotland’s industrial base and also, the wider economy of Scotland.
