To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will introduce legislation to (a) give the status of legal tender to banknotes issued by Scottish clearing banks and (b) create a legal obligation for English retailers to accept such notes. (183741)

The Government have no plans to introduce such legislation. The acceptability of banknotes or other payment arrangements for transactions is a matter for the parties concerned to agree upon.
