Incapacity Benefit

Volume 472: debated on Wednesday 5 March 2008

To ask the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions what estimate he has made of the proportion of incapacity benefit claimants who have had a full, independent medical assessment. (181646)

All new claimants of incapacity benefits have always been subject to medical assessment in order to establish their eligibility to the benefit.

Since 3 April 2000, the Personal Capability Assessment has generally been applied from the outset of a claim although there are some exceptions.

It is not possible to calculate the proportion of incapacity benefit claimants who have had a full medical assessment.
