Organs

Volume 472: debated on Thursday 6 March 2008

To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many organs for transplantation were (a) stolen and (b) lost from NHS premises in each of the last five years. (188840)

Under the Human Tissue Act 2004 (Ethical Approval, Exceptions from Licensing and Supply of Information about Transplants) Regulations 2006, practitioners must be able to account for every organ procured, transplanted or in any case where the organ is not transplanted, the manner of disposal. There is no evidence to show that any organs for transplant have been either lost or stolen from national health service premises.
