To ask the Secretary of State for Innovation, Universities and Skills (1) how many university places were offered to applicants resident in Essex in each of the last five years; (185306)

(2) how many applications were made to universities by people resident in Essex in each of the last five years.

The latest figures from UCAS (the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service), showing the number of students who applied and the number who were accepted for entry, are shown in the table.

Overall, for all students from England, the UCAS figures show that, compared to 2006, applicants who had been accepted for entry in 2007, rose by 6.1 per cent. to 307,000, the highest ever.
