Parliamentary ICT

Volume 473: debated on Monday 17 March 2008

To ask the hon. Member for North Devon, representing the House of Commons Commission if the Commission will take steps to ensure that Parliamentary ICT staff provide support and services to all IT equipment and software on the parliamentary estate which is (a) purchased with parliamentary allowances and (b) used for parliamentary business; and if he will make a statement. (193512)

The Commission has recently endorsed the recommendation of the Administration Committee that Parliamentary ICT (PICT) can only offer full support to centrally provided IT equipment, services and software, on both practical and economic grounds. PICT will be announcing two new services shortly that will allow those Members who use their equipment to connect directly to the internet from their Westminster office over broadband at their own expense or for free via wireless in one of the Wi Fi zones that are currently available across the estate. With the agreement of the Commission, PICT is considering the circumstances under which limited ‘best endeavours’ support can be offered to Members own equipment that is used for parliamentary purposes.
