Mental Health Act 2007

Volume 474: debated on Monday 31 March 2008

To ask the Secretary of State for Health pursuant to the answer of 17 March 2008, Official Report, column 748W, on the Mental Health Act 2007, when the code of practice will be finalised; when the secondary legislation will be laid before Parliament; and what the timetable is for (a) the introduction and (b) the implementation of the programme by the Care Services Improvement Partnership. (197010)

We intend that the majority of changes to the Mental Health Act 1983 (the 1983 Act) made by the Mental Health Act 2007 will be brought into force in October this year. Shortly after the Easter recess we intend to make secondary legislation needed in connection with those changes and to lay before Parliament a revised code of practice for the 1983 Act. The Care Services Improvement Partnership is already working with commissioners, providers, and practitioners to prepare them for the implementation of the changes.
