Legal Aid Scheme: Drugs

Volume 474: debated on Wednesday 2 April 2008

To ask the Secretary of State for Justice if he will estimate expenditure on legal aid for defendants with drug addictions in 2007. (197660)

An individual applying for legal aid is not required to disclose whether he or she has a drug addiction. Moreover, an individual with a drug addiction could receive legal aid in matters not connected with the addiction. Therefore, it is not possible to provide reliable estimates of expenditure on legal aid for those with drug addictions.
