Prisoners: British Nationality

To ask the Secretary of State for Justice how many UK nationals have been repatriated to finish their sentences in UK prisons in the last three years. (213042)

Between 1 January 2005 and 31 December 2007, 172 British nationals convicted of offences committed abroad were returned to prisons in England and Wales to continue serving their sentences. The annual break down of transfers in the last three years is as follows.

The repatriation of prisoners to Scotland and to Northern Ireland is a matter for the Scottish Government and for the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland respectively.
