Zimbabwe: Elections

Volume 478: debated on Monday 23 June 2008

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what assessment he has made of the likely effects of the role of the Zimbabwean military on the re-run of the presidential elections expected on 27th June; and if he will make a statement. (210529)

We are increasingly concerned about the role of the Zimbabwean military and other security forces in perpetrating violence in the run up to the presidential election on 27 June. For it to be credible, the election needs to take place in a free and fair environment. That is why we are pressing for the deployment of international observers as soon as possible.
