Gambling: Young People

To ask the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport what recent research his Department has commissioned into levels of gambling amongst young people aged (a) between 16 and 18 and (b) under 16 years. (219686)

The British Gambling Prevalence Survey (BGPS) 2007, commissioned by the Gambling Commission, provides data on participation in gambling and the prevalence of problem gambling in Britain among the adult population aged 16 and above. The Gambling Commission have also commissioned a literature review of children and gambling which is due to be published in the summer. The National Lottery Commission’s (NLC) ongoing research programme includes regular tracking surveys of 12-to-15 year-olds to monitor underage play of the national lottery. This research includes information on underage participation in other gambling activities. The NLC are in the tender process for the next survey which is due to be published in summer 2009.
