Asylum: Employment

Volume 481: debated on Tuesday 21 October 2008

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department on what conditions asylum seekers may work when their application has not been determined after 12 months through no fault of theirs. (227549)

[holding answer 16 October 2008]: An asylum applicant may apply for permission to take up employment if a decision at first instance has not been taken on the applicant’s asylum application within one year of the date on which it was recorded. The application to take employment will only be considered if the delay in reaching a decision cannot be attributed to the applicant. If permission to work is granted, this precludes self-employment, business or professional activity.
