XL Leisure Group

Volume 481: debated on Tuesday 21 October 2008

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport (1) what steps his Department is taking with the travel industry following the collapse of XL Leisure Group to ensure that consumers are covered in the event of future airline company failures; (228018)

(2) if he will consider representations from the Association of British Travel Agents to introduce a universal consumer protection scheme for air travellers.

[holding answer 17 October 2008]: The Government are keen to learn the lessons of XL’s failure and over the coming weeks officials and Ministers will be discussing a range of issues arising with stakeholders with a view to improving the experience of passengers in future airline or tour operator failures. As part of this process I shall be happy to meet with ABTA to hear their views.
