Hepatitis

Volume 481: debated on Tuesday 21 October 2008

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what estimate he has made of the number of new cases of hepatitis C in each of the last 10 years. (227825)

The Health Protection Agency has not had any estimates of newly acquired hepatitis C virus infections in the past 10 years. Such estimates cannot be made directly from national surveillance of serological tests for hepatitis C, as these do not distinguish between acute (new) and chronic (long-term) infections or between resolved and current infections.
