Nuclear Power Stations

Volume 481: debated on Tuesday 28 October 2008

To ask the Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change what assessment he has made of the availability of UK labour to build the next generation of nuclear power stations. (225547)

The Nuclear White Paper, published in January 2008, provides an assessment of the availability of skilled workers in the UK to build a new programme of nuclear power stations. Government believe that a programme of new nuclear power station construction in the UK has the potential to create many thousands of UK jobs. However there will be challenges in meeting the need for skilled workers, and Government are working with industry to meet the expected high levels of demand for trained staff, including work with Cogent, the National Skills Academy for Nuclear and the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority.
