Roads: Accidents

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport how many (a) fatalities, (b) serious injuries and (c) other outcomes there were in road traffic accidents in (i) Hemel Hempstead and (ii) Hertfordshire reported to his Department in each month in each of the last five years. (242673)

The numbers of casualties in reported personal injury road accidents in (i) the parliamentary constituency of Hemel Hempstead and (ii) the local authority of Hertfordshire in each month of the last five years are given in the following tables.

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what estimate he has made of the proportion of road fatalities caused by vehicle equipment malfunction and failure. (244038)

The contributory factors data collected by the police officer at the scene of the incident show that “vehicle defects” contributed to 3 per cent. of fatal collisions in 2007. The contributory factors article is published in ‘Road Casualties Great Britain: annual report 2007’. Copies of the report have been deposited in the Libraries of the House.
