Community Orders

Volume 485: debated on Wednesday 17 December 2008

To ask the Secretary of State for Justice what the (a) breach rate of community sentences and (b) imprisonment rate for those who breached community sentences was in the latest period for which figures are available; and if he will make a statement. (243284)

In response to part (a) of the question, the following table shows the proportion of community sentences that terminated in England and Wales in 2007 (the latest year for which the figures are available) for positive and negative reasons, including failing to comply with the order and conviction for further offences.

The information contained in this table can be found in chapter 5 of Offender Management Caseload Statistics 2007 located online at:

In response to (b), the data held centrally on terminations of community sentences does not include information on whether the termination resulted in imprisonment.

These figures have been drawn from administrative IT systems which, as with any large scale recording system, are subject to possible errors with data entry and processing.
