Departmental Official Hospitality

Volume 486: debated on Tuesday 13 January 2009

To ask the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport what records his Department maintains of its expenditure on (a) official hospitality and (b) alcohol for official hospitality. (240475)

The Department records information on its expenditure on hospitality, including the associated staff costs, in such a way as it states the costs of official functions, internal working lunches and other hospitality separately.

The Department’s accounting system does not record information on alcohol separately, and this information could be obtained only at disproportionate cost.

All expenditure on official hospitality is made in accordance with published departmental guidance on gifts and hospitality, based on the principles of “Managing Public Money” and the Treasury handbook on “Regularity and Propriety”.
