Head Teachers: Qualifications

Volume 487: debated on Monday 26 January 2009

To ask the Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families what estimate he has made of the likely level of take-up of the National Professional Qualification for Headship. (247284)

The current national professional qualification for headship (NPQH) is being phased out this year following the introduction of the redesigned NPQH in September 2008. Recruitment to the redesigned NPQH to the end of March 2009 is estimated to be 1,500, while 4,008 have already graduated from the current NPQH since April 2008.

The National College of School Leadership will estimate the level of annual recruitment required based on the level of headship vacancies and include an additional percentage to allow for unavoidable deferrals and withdrawals. This number will be between 2,000 and 2,500 each year.
