Dogs: Electric Shock Equipment

Volume 487: debated on Tuesday 3 February 2009

To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs what recent progress has been made on the research commissioned by his Department into the use of electronic pet training aids for dogs; when he expects the research to be completed; and if he will make a statement. (251076)

The research into electronic training aids funded by DEFRA is progressing well and in accordance with the agreed milestones. There are no results available for dissemination at this time as the research is still under way. The project is due to be completed in 2010.

To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs if he will consider the merits of the effects of imposing restrictions on the advertising of electric shock training devices. (251077)

The Government have no plans at present to restrict or ban the advertising, sale or use of electronic training aids for animals. We are waiting for the results of DEFRA-funded research before making any decision as to whether to restrict or ban the use of such devices.
