Advertising: Regulation

Volume 487: debated on Thursday 5 February 2009

To ask the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport what recent steps his Department has taken to regulate the advertising industry. (253800)

[holding answer 4 February 2009]: Advertising in the UK is strictly controlled through a system of co-regulation and self-regulation, which is enforced by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA). This regulatory system is independent of Government and is ultimately responsible for setting the standards in advertising.

The bodies responsible for writing and maintaining the advertising codes, the Committee of Advertising Practice (CAP) and the Broadcast Committee of Advertising Practice (BCAP), are currently undertaking a full review of all the advertising codes. CAP and BCAP will hold a public consultation on proposed changes to the advertising codes in 2009.
