Malnutrition

Volume 487: debated on Thursday 5 February 2009

To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many and what percentage of people in each age group (a) admitted to and (b) discharged from hospital were malnourished in the last year in which figures are available; and if he will make a statement. (247152)

The data we have provided in the following table are the latest available and includes both the number diagnosed with malnutrition2 and this as a proportion of the total admissions and last episodes (discharges1) into hospital for the following age groups; 0-4, 5-14, 15-24, 25-34, 35-44, 45-54, 55-64, 65-74, 75-84, 85-120 where there was a primary or a secondary diagnosis of malnutrition in 2006-07.

Admission figures do not include patients showing signs of malnutrition, who subsequently undergo tests during their hospital stay to establish the cause of their symptoms.

Count and proportion of all admissions and last episodes (discharges1) in hospital where a patient had a primary or secondary diagnosis of malnutrition2 during his/her stay in 2006-07, activity in English NHS hospitals and English NHS commissioned activity in the independent sector
