To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what percentage of leisure journeys by (a) rail, (b) car and (c) bus or coach were made by people aged (i) under 16, (ii) between 18 and 19, (iii) between 20 and 24, (iv) between 25 and 34, (v) between 35 and 44, (vi) between 45 and 59, (vii) between 60 and 64, (viii) between 65 and 69 and (ix) 70 years and over in each year since 1997. The figures provided as follows are from the National Travel Survey and reflect the percentage of leisure journeys made in Great Britain by age and main mode from 1996-98 to 2006. The National Travel Survey is readily available from:

Notes:

1. Leisure includes: Visiting friends at private home, visiting friends elsewhere, entertainment/public activity, sport: participate, holiday: base, day trip and other inc. just walk.

2. The sample size of the National Travel Survey was increased from 2002 which enables single years to be presented. Prior to 2002 data are shown for three year periods because of the smaller sample sizes, and for surface rail a larger number of survey years have been aggregated due to the small number of these types of trips.
