Meat Hygiene Service: Inspections

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what the cost of inspections carried out by the Meat Hygiene Service was in each year since 1997. (257671)

The Meat Hygiene Service (MHS) undertakes not just inspection activities in abattoirs but also programmes for other Government Departments such as the Department for the Environment Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) for animal health and welfare purposes. The gross cost of the MHS and the proportion of that cost, including administrative and managerial support costs that relates to inspection, is shown in the following table.
