National Identity Register

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department pursuant to the answer of 23 February 2009, Official Report, column 158W, on the National Identity Register: data protection, what information beyond confirming the validity of data may be provided for the purpose of prevention and detection of crime; and what additional information may be made available for that purpose. The identity information held on the National Identity Register, as listed in section 3 and schedule 1 of the Identity Cards Act 2006, may be provided to the security and intelligence services, police and Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs and Government Departments where specified in secondary legislation for the purposes, including the prevention and detection of crime, prescribed in section 17 of the Identity Cards Act 2006.
