Ambulance Services

Volume 488: debated on Monday 2 March 2009

To ask the Secretary of State for Health (1) what assessment he has made of the impact of the use of the NHS Pathways system by North East Ambulance Service on those patients who required an ambulance as part of their care; (259174)

(2) what the total was of the trial of the NHS Pathways system used by the North East Ambulance Service in the last two years.

The Department commissioned a research evaluation of the accuracy and safety of NHS Pathways by a group of researchers from three universities. The research looked at all types of patients assessed by NHS Pathways, including those who needed an ambulance. A copy of the evaluation, “An evaluation of the accuracy and safety of NHS Pathways”, has been placed in the Library. Information is not available centrally on the cost of the trial of the NHS Pathways system by North East Ambulance Service as these costs were met locally.
