Departmental Sick Leave

Volume 489: debated on Tuesday 10 March 2009

To ask the Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change (1) how many staff in his Department and its predecessors were on sick leave for (a) over 30 days, (b) over 50 days and (c) over 100 days in each of the last five years; (256323)

(2) what the average number of days of sick leave per staff member in his Department has been since it was established;

(3) how many staff in his Department were recorded as having been on sick leave for over 12 months on 31 December 2008.

The Department of Energy and Climate Change has been formed by bringing together work previously covered by the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform and the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. Sickness absence records are currently held by the two legacy departments and a system for bringing these records together will be implemented for the new reporting year 2009-10. Until this system is in place the Department would incur a disproportionate cost in reporting these figures.
