The Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) collects visitor figures from the museums and galleries that it sponsors. While the figures for the full year 2008-09 are not yet available, DCMS estimates that 40 million visits will have been made to DCMS-funded museums and galleries by the end of the 2008-09 financial year.
