Letter of correction from Kevin Brennan:

The UK Statistics Authority has identified an error in the written response it provided to the hon. Member for Winchester (Mr. Oaten) on 9 March 2009:

The original answer was as follows: (260601)

[holding answer 4 March 2009]: The information requested falls within the responsibility of the UK Statistics Authority. I have asked the authority to reply.

Letter from Karen Dunnell, dated March 2009:

As National Statistician, I have been asked to reply to your question asking what percentage of individuals on the electoral register are listed anonymously. (260601).

Just over one in one thousand individuals registered to vote in the local/European elections are listed anonymously in England and Wales, for 2008. Just under one in one thousand are listed in Scotland, for 2008. The legislation for anonymous registration is not yet enacted in Northern Ireland.

The National Statistician has informed me that the correct answer should have been:

Just over one in one hundred thousand individuals registered to vote in the local/European elections are listed anonymously in England and Wales for 2008; under one in one hundred thousand are listed in Scotland for 2008. The legislation for anonymous registration is not yet enacted in Northern Ireland.
