Iran: Nuclear Power

Volume 491: debated on Monday 27 April 2009

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs whether it is his policy that suspension by Iran of its uranium enrichment programme should be a precondition for negotiations on its nuclear programme; and if he will make a statement. (270687)

The UK fully subscribes to the E3+3 group of countries’ dual-track strategy, which makes clear that Iran must suspend its enrichment-related activities, as required by five UN Security Council Resolutions, before full negotiations can begin. Iran needs to demonstrate the exclusively peaceful nature of its nuclear programme. We and our E3+3 partners will continue to try and persuade Iran that negotiations and transparency present the best route to resolving this issue.
