Fertility: Medical Treatments

Volume 491: debated on Monday 27 April 2009

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what counselling services are available on the NHS for couples seeking NHS-funded infertility treatment. (270648)

All clinics providing infertility treatment such as in vitro fertilisation are required in law to offer counselling about the treatment to be provided. If the treatment involves the use of donated gametes or embryos, patients must be given a suitable opportunity to receive counselling about the implications. The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority's code of practice for licensed clinics requires counselling to be provided only by licensed counsellors.
