Blood: Contamination

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what priority is accorded to pathogen inactivation for blood products by the Advisory Committee on the Safety of Blood, Tissues and Organs; and if he will make a statement. (277378)

Advice on measures to reduce the risk of transmission of bacterial and other infections via blood, particularly blood components such as red cells, platelets and plasma, is central to the work of the Advisory Committee on the Safety of Blood, Tissues and Organs.

Fractionated blood products such as albumin, clotting factors and immunoglobulins are regulated as medicinal products, and are subject to the requirements of the Community code for safety, quality and efficacy of medicinal products as defined in European Directive 2001/83/EC.
