Sri Lanka: Internally Displaced Persons

Volume 493: debated on Thursday 4 June 2009

To ask the Secretary of State for International Development what recent discussions he has had with the government of Sri Lanka on (a) freedom of movement of individuals in the camps for those internally displaced as a result of the recent conflict and (b) plans to return such people to their home areas. (277252)

I have repeatedly pressed the Government of Sri Lanka to improve conditions in the internally displaced persons (IDP) camps and to abide by international humanitarian standards, including freedom of movement to leave the camps. We have also continually held the Government of Sri Lanka to its stated obligation to return at least 80 per cent. of the IDPs by the end of this year.
