Volume 494: debated on Monday 15 June 2009

21. To ask the Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families what recent assessment he has made of standards of educational achievement in primary schools. (279180)

Standards in primary schools have never been higher. In 2008 Key Stage 2 results show 81 per cent. of 11-year-olds achieved level 4 or above in English and 79 per cent. achieved level 4 or above in mathematics.

There have been consistent and significant improvements in our primary schools over the past decade. Compared to 1997, over 113,000 more 11-year-olds achieved the target level for their age in reading, writing and mathematics in 2008.
