Lung Cancer: Surgery

To ask the Secretary of State for Health whether he plans to (a) increase the number of thoracic surgeons and (b) increase the rates of surgical resection for lung cancer patients. (279896)

It is for local service providers to determine the work force required to deliver the health service needs of their population, and to ensure that care is delivered in a manner that meets national standards.

In 2005, the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) issued guidelines on the diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer patients. NICE recommends surgical resection for suitable lung cancer patients.
