Kosovo: Infant Mortality

Volume 494: debated on Wednesday 17 June 2009

To ask the Secretary of State for International Development what recent estimate he has made of (a) infant and (b) maternal mortality rates in Kosovo; and if he will make a statement. (279610)

Health statistics in Kosovo are not reliable. Nevertheless, the figures available for Kosovo point to health indicators among the worst in Europe, despite the positive downward trend since 2000.

The United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) quotes the infant mortality rate for Kosovo as between 35 and 49 per 1,000 live births. For maternal mortality, the UN Development Programme (UNDP) reported a rate of 6.9 per 100,000 births in 2005.
