Volume 495: debated on Monday 29 June 2009

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what research his Department has conducted on the social effects of the (a) distribution of and (b) number of unsupported refused asylum seekers without the right to work; and if he will make a statement. (281571)

The Department has not conducted such research. It is not our policy to allow asylum seekers to work because we believe that managed migration is a valuable source of skills and labour to the British economy and there are recognised routes into the UK for those seeking to work.
