Health Education: Local Government

Volume 495: debated on Monday 6 July 2009

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what role he envisages for local government in the proposed health innovation education clusters. (283208)

There is no single prescribed model for a health innovation and education cluster (HIEC) and each one will depend on local circumstances, but a local authority could be a formal partner in a HIEC through their responsibility for social care. That could create opportunities for innovation in care pathways, for example for long-term conditions, mental health and children’s services. It could also lead to developments in the joint training of health and social care professionals.

Where a local authority is not a formal partner there will be a link to the HIEC through the local authority’s role as a provider of services.
