Nuclear Power Stations: Accidents

Volume 495: debated on Tuesday 7 July 2009

To ask the Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change what contingency plans are in place to deal with serious nuclear incidents. (280803)

All nuclear installations in the UK have detailed emergency plans in order to respond to an accident or emergency that could occur on the site. The on and off-site plans are tested on a regular basis. Testing of the emergency plans is assessed by teams of inspectors from the Health and Safety Executive’s nuclear installations inspectorate. Annually, one of the nuclear licensed site off-site emergency plans is chosen to test not only the regional response to an emergency but also test the wider arrangements to involve central Government, including the exercising of the various Government Departments and agencies.
