Nuclear Weapons

Volume 496: debated on Monday 20 July 2009

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence whether a British nuclear deterrent system consisting of (a) land-based, (b) air-launched and (c) ship-borne nuclear cruise missiles would be compatible with the provisions of the 1987 Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces Treaty. (287182)

The 1987 Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces Treaty is a bilateral treaty between the US and Russia. The UK is not a state party to the treaty and our nuclear deterrent is not bound by its provisions.

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what his latest estimate is of the lifetime cost of a replacement system for Trident. (288433)

I refer the hon. Member to the answer I gave on 13 July 2009, Official Report, column 19W, to the hon. Member for Orkney and Shetland (Mr. Carmichael).
