Non-Domestic Rates

Volume 496: debated on Wednesday 9 September 2009

To ask the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government if he will make it his policy to extend Small Business Rate Relief to cover enterprises with an annual turnover of less than £500,000; and if he will make a statement. (290858)

The Government have no plans to make such a change. The Small Business Rate Relief scheme is based on the rateable value of premises and is targeted at small businesses occupying premises with low rateable values. Billing authorities do not hold the data on businesses occupying property liable for business rates which would be necessary to base eligibility for Small Business Rate Relief on business turnover rather than the rateable value of their property.
