Copyright: Music

Volume 496: debated on Wednesday 9 September 2009

To ask the Secretary of State for Justice how many people have been convicted of offences of copying music stored on a compact disc to a digital format for their own personal use in each of the last 20 years. (290627)

Personal copying is a civil matter and not a criminal offence. As a result, there are no criminal convictions in relation to such an activity. Copying from one media to another becomes a criminal offence under Section 107 of the Copyright Designs and Patents Act 1988 only if conducted on a scale prejudicial to the interests of the legitimate rights holder, or in the course of business.
