Sentencing

To ask the Secretary of State for Justice how many people were sentenced to immediate custody in each year since 1997; and how many received sentences of (a) less than three months, (b) between three and six months, (c) between six and 12 months and (d) one year or more. (295806)

The data are presented on the principal offence basis: where an offender has been sentenced for more than one offence the principal offence is the offence for which the heaviest penalty was imposed: where the same sentence has been imposed for more than one offence the principal offence is the one for which the statutory maximum is most severe.

The following table gives the numbers of prisoners serving sentences of (i) less than or equal to three months, (ii) between three and six months, (iii) between six and 12 months, as at 30 June 2009, the latest date for which figures are available:
