To ask the Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families how many pupils eligible for free school meals did not sit GCSE examinations in five or more subjects in 2008. (286397)

Of those pupils eligible to receive free school meals in maintained schools in England, 8,704 pupils were not entered for GCSE examinations in five or more subjects in 2008.

The figure includes all GCSE and equivalent qualifications.

This figure has been derived from the National Pupil Database. Data on pupils’ eligibility for free school meals are collected in the Pupil-Level Annual School Census which only takes place in maintained schools.
