Police: Public Appointments

Volume 498: debated on Monday 2 November 2009

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department whom police authorities are required to consult before they appoint a chief constable; what regulations govern such appointments; and if he will make a statement. (296637)

Police authorities appoint chief constables subject to the approval of the Home Secretary and to police regulations, and involving the regional HM Inspector of Constabulary. Other consultation, consistent with good recruitment practice, is a matter for the police authority.

Regulation 11 of the Police Regulations 2003, as amended by the Police (Amendment) Regulations 2006, covers the appointment of senior officers.
