Home Education

Volume 502: debated on Tuesday 8 December 2009

To ask the Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families how many children under the age of 16 years were being educated at home (a) at the latest date for which information is available and (b) in each year since 1997. (301887)

We do not collect information centrally about the number of children under the age of 16 who are electively home educated because there is no current requirement for these children to be registered with local authorities. Graham Badman's ‘Review of Elective Home Education in England’, published in June 2009, estimated that there were around 20,000 home educated children and young people currently known to local authorities.
